Abstract

This PhD dissertation investigates how students in two 4th grade Danish classes create semantic coherence in their own texts. Anchored in writing research within school and education, the study conducts qualitative text analyses grounded in text linguistics and social semiotics. Furthermore, the students’ texts are interpreted through in-depth analyses of the empirical writing and teaching contexts in which they were produced. The study identifies four overarching ways of writing - referred to as coherence modes - along with contextual key incidents that influence students’ writing, often in subjectively conditioned ways. It contributes new insights into how 4th grade students write, and how coherence can be understood and studied at this educational level. From a didactic perspective, the study provides knowledge that may help teachers support students’ writing development, with particular attention to content and communicative function.
