The PhD dissertation explores how academic participation opportunities are established and constrained within Danish as a Second Language (basis) across different models of reception education in primary school. The study takes an empirical point of departure in a multiple ethnographic case study of three schools representing diverse organizational approaches to basic instruction for newly arrived and displaced Ukrainian students. Drawing on social literacy theory, the analysis examines how legal, organizational, and didactic frameworks are interrelated in shaping, negotiating, and at times limiting students’ access and participation opportunities in the school’s academic practices. The dissertation develops the concept of an ecological continuum of opportunities, which captures how participation opportunities shift between participation and absence of participation and offers new ways of understanding Danish as a Second Language (basis) as a framework for students’ academic participation opportunities.
