After a short introduction to the author’s experience of the creation of “Middelaldercirklen”, the article focuses on Anselm of Canterbury’s view on the first crusade. Previous research has generally stated that Anselm opposed the crusade idea as it was not compatible with his theological and religious thinking. Based on Sally N. Vaughn’s studies of Anselm’s political career, the article reevaluates Anselm’s view on the first crusade and argues that Anselm didn’t oppose but rather supported the first crusade. At the same time the article also points to the differences in the view on crusading between Anselm and the reform papacy.
