Abstract

The Catalogue of Ships in Iliad 2 is a special passage. It was clearly not composed for the context in which it has been transmitted, and a series of other peculiarities has made it a key to most of the basic Homeric questions. Over the years its aesthetic value has been very differently estimated by scholars. This paper offers a survey of the various opinions, a description and analysis of the text as a testimony to Homeric poetics, a report of its earliest reception, and a discussion of how it can be understood and read with pleasure.
