Submissions

Author Guidelines

We kindly ask authors to sign in at tidsskrift.dk/Serendipities/ to submit an article.

As part of the submission process, authors will be required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration. In case of doubt, please write your explanation in a Comment to the Editor.
2. The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
4. The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed at the end of the text, with indications in the text where to be placed in the final version.
5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

 

Languages

Serendipities accepts submissions in English for reviewing and publication. For submissions in other languages than English in certain cases, please contact the editors, who will try to deal with other languages upon request and in accordance with our skills and resources. In these cases, however, the authors will be asked to provide an English version of their accepted papers.

This journal is read by a truly diverse range of academics, many of whom are not native English speakers. Please therefore give careful thought to communicating your findings as clearly as possible.

An article submitted to Serendipities must be an original, unpublished manuscript which is not under consideration for publication elsewhere.

 

Submission

• Complete manuscripts can only be submitted online through our journal management software as MS-Word-doc-, docx- or RTF-file.
• The manuscript will be reviewed anonymously (double-blind).
• The final version of the manuscript must correspond with the reviewers’ recommendations.

 

Length, format and contents of manuscripts

Submitted articles are expected not to exceed 7,000 words or 55,000 characters (with spaces, notes, tables/figures and references). Contributions to symposia (or other discussion papers) are expected not to be longer than 3,500 words or 25,000 characters (with spaces). In certain cases, however, editors can decide to accept longer papers.

Manuscripts should be composed of the following elements:

• Contact information: The cover letter should provide full contact details of the author(s): postal and e-mail addresses, telephone and fax numbers.
• Main text: The article should use the A4 format, be double spaced (preferably 30 lines per page with 60 letters each) and with broad margins. Leave the right margins ragged and avoid word divisions and hyphens at the ends of lines. Italics may be used for emphasis, however in moderation.
• Quotations: When fewer than three lines, the quotations must be enclosed by quotation marks in the body of the text and enclosed by quotation marks in a separate paragraph if they are more extensive than that.
• Language: The final versions of manuscripts are expected to be written in a stylistically sophisticated and orthographically consistent English. Whether to use the British or the US-American spelling, is up to the author. All papers are quality-controlled after submission. Papers that do not meet our requirements are returned to the authors for correction. This can delay the processing of manuscripts.
• Gender-neutral language should be maintained consistently throughout the manuscript.
• Tables/Figures: Tables and figures should not be included within the pages of the main text, but placed on separate pages at the end of the text. They should be numbered consecutively and include a short descriptive heading and information about the sources used. Indicate where the tables and figures should be placed in the final text (e. g. "Table 3 about here").
• Notes: The notes should be brief and formatted as footnotes and numbered consecutively.
• References: The list of references should include all works referred to in the text in the bibliographical information following tables and figures, or in the notes. For more detailed guidelines concerning references and citations, see point 3 and 4 below.
• Abstracts: The manuscript should come with an abstract in English, but additional language abstracts are welcome. The abstract must be a self-contained text, not exceeding 800 characters.
• Keywords: Please submit 3 to 5 keywords in English.
• Short title: Please submit a short title for your paper (for the header of the article).
• Short biographical note: Together with the manuscript a short biographical note about the author should be provided; it should not exceed 800 characters. We will publish your e-mail address as a footnote on the title page.

 

Citations

Use quotation marks for directly cited phrases or sentences within the text. Direct citations of over three lines in length should be indented and quotation marks removed.

References must be integrated into the text, providing (in brackets) the name of the author/editor, the publication year and the page number(s). In text referencing should be used as long as not more than three different sources are given. If further text is needed authors should make use of footnotes.

Examples for in text referencing:

• Reference to one author/editor: "(Merton 1968)" or "(Merton 1968: 15)"
• Reference to more authors/editors: "(Becker 2014: 25; Jahoda 1994: 16)"
• Reference to more works of one author in the same year: "(Merton 1968a; 1968b)"
• Reference to a work with two authors/editors: "(Lazarsfeld and Thielens 1958)"
• Reference to a work with more than two authors/editors: "(Jahoda et al. 1933)"
• Reference to an author within the text: "According to Merton (1968: 15) we conclude..."
• Reference to a source at the end of a sentence: “after studying with Georg Simmel in Germany (Menand 2002: 379–380).”
• For archival sources authors should use the footnotes and not make use of in-text referencing.

 

List of references

All the literature mentioned in the text should be included in the list of references. The bibliographical dates should be typed in alphabetical order. For example:

Further requests:

• Please consult texts published earlier in Serendipities to familiarize with the house styles.
• Please ensure that spelling, titles, and publication dates used in the text correspond to those listed in the references.
• In the list of references, spell out each author’s/editor’s full last and first name. Do not use “et al.”, but list the names of all authors and co-authors (editors and co-editors).
• When using a re-published work or a translation, the date of the original edition may also be given in square brackets, e.g. “Mauss, Marcel (1990 [1950]) Die Gabe...”.
• Include the title and the subtitle of sources.
• State the names of journals in full. Note that volume, issue, and page numbers are required for journal articles, as well as page numbers for articles in edited volumes.

 

Peer Review Process

All research articles under consideration for publication in Serendipities are subject to a double-blind peer review process. Each article receives a minimum of two reviews that, together with an editor’s decision letter, will be returned to author(s) usually within two-to-three months after receipt of the manuscript.

Authors are responsible to anonymize their manuscripts so that their identity is not revealed anywhere in the text.

Contributions to the forum and book review section are being edited by members of the editorial board and receive no external peer review.

 

Proofs

Authors are expected to correct proofs within one weeks after receiving them.
