Resumé

I Den Kongelige Samlings gemmer findes en betydelig beholdning af børnetøj, hvoraf langt det meste stammer fra det 20. århundrede. Denne del af samlingen har hidtil levet et en lidt upåagtet tilværelse, hvilket kan skyldes, at den på flere punkter adskiller sig fra samlingen som helhed, der primært består af ceremonielle kongedragter. I forhold til de pragtfulde og usædvanligt eksklusive dragter fremstår børnetøjet langt mindre ekstraordinært, ligesom det typisk er vanskeligt at knytte det til bestemte begivenheder af personlig eller national betydning.

Expensive but conventional

The Royal Collection’s storerooms contain a substantial collection of children’s clothing, the vast majority of which dates from the 20th century. This part of the collection has, until now, led a somewhat overlooked existence, which may be due to the fact that it differs in several respects from the collection as a whole, which consists primarily of ceremonial royal robes. Compared with the magnificent and exceptionally exclusive royal garments, the children’s clothing appears far less extraordinary, and it is typically difficult to link it to specific events of personal or national significance.
