Ofte handler historieskrivning om successer. Denne artikel gør det modsatte - den analyserer kollapsede broer, som resulterer i, at man pludselig mister et vigtigt led i transportnettet. Der er mange årsager til ulykkerne - forkerte valg af materialer og design, dårligt konstruktionsarbejde, og evt. senere kombineret med dårligt tilsyn og vedligeholdelse. Der kan også være eksterne årsager som storm, oversvømmelse, påsejling af skibe eller påkørsel af køretøjer.
