Resumé

Fra Adam Smith til Karl Marx og videre op til moderne tid har økonomer af vidt forskellig observans været enige om, at kapitalakkumulationen er den fundamentale drivkraft i den kapitalistiske økonomis udvikling. I "Wealth of Nations" skrev Adam Smith bl.a.: "Every increase or diminution of capital... naturally tends to increase or diminish the real quantity of industry, the number of productive hands and consequently the exchangeable value of the annual produce of the land and labour of the country, the real wealth and revenue of all its inhabitants." Disse og lignende betragtninger hos Smith blev af Marx kommenteret med den berømte sætning: "Akkumuliert, Akkumuliert, das ist Moses und die Propheten!" (citater efter Boserup (1976, ss. 75-83)).
