Abstract

Deploying a quantitative content analysis, this article examines how minority groups are represented in the most popular films in Danish cinemas, and whether there has been a development over time. Based on gender, ethnicity and sexuality, a total of 100 films are analysed from 1976-1980 and 2012-2016 respectively. When analysing the total of 500 characters, it is concluded that the white, heterosexual man is dominating both in the early and late period of time. Non-whites and non-heterosexuals are almost non-existing among the leading roles, and are still, as is the case with women, portrayed in a stereotypical manner.
