Den metaforiske konceptualisering af FORFØRELSE i et tysksproget Pickup Artist-fællesskab

In this paper, I apply corpus-assisted metaphor analysis to explore the metaphorical conceptualization of the act of seduction in a German-speaking forum of Pickup Artists, pickupforum.de. The Pickup Artist-community is populated by a majority of young, heterosexual men who congregate on social media and in online forums, of which pickupforum.de is an example. The goal of the paper is to determine which domains are characteristic for the conceptualization of the target domain, SEDUCTION, and what the use of these specific source domains implies about community attitudes towards sexual encounters between men and women. Applying keyword analysis, I identify the conceptual domains of MILITARY ACTION, GAME and FINANCIAL TRANSACTION as particularly characteristic of pickupforum.de. I then follow a metaphor identification procedure with the aim of identifying all mappings related to the pairing of the target domain and the three source domains. On this basis, I describe the presence of the metaphors SEDUCTION IS A MILITARY ACTION, SEDUCTION IS A GAME and SEDUCTION IS A FINANCIAL TRANSACTION on pickupforum.de. The source domains all share the trait of not conceptualizing seduction as a cooperative process between equals, but as one necessarily entailing winners and losers. Comparing this to discourse outside of Pickup Artist-spaces, I concluded that, in spite of users on pickupforum.de having a unique vocabulary of terms mapping MILITARY ACTION, GAME and FINANCIAL TRANSACTION unto the domain of SEDUCTION, the three source domains are not in themselves Pickup Artist-specific. Instead, they are an extension of tendencies in discourse on heterosexual relations at large.
