Ludvig Holbergs vei til New York 1751
En angloamerikansk kompilasjonshistorie fra 1700-tallet

The article discusses an English compilation of Ludvig Holberg’s essays Moralske Tanker (1744). This compilation, published anonymously in 1750 as The Reflector, adapted and systemized Holberg’s essays according to moral themes. Although many of the references to Nordic culture and to Holberg’s other writings still feature in the English text, the first person »I« is no longer identifiable as Holberg. The Reflector has often been attributed to writer and physician Peter Shaw (1694-1763). The article discusses how the compilation found in The Reflector is consistent with the »methodization« Shaw applied to other authorships in a spirit of rationalism. Although not a very successful publication, The Reflector had some impact in English intellectual life. For example, Shaw is some times quoted as an early instance of interest in psychosomatic disorder, and such quotes are shown to be translations of Holberg. The article also shows how Holberg’s essays, via The Reflector, feature in New York newspapers in the early 1750s. Finally it is demonstrated that the English compilation almost certainly is based on the first of two German translations of Holberg’s text (Ludvig Holbergs Moralische Abhandlungen, 1744) and it is argued that knowledge of German is also evident elsewhere in Shaw’s texts.
