The two alternative endings to Carl Nielsen’s Flute Concerto conclude the work in different keys. This article explores some analytical and theoretical issues raised by the radically different overall tonal structures implied by these different conclusions, taking the opportunity to reflect on our understanding of what tonal closure means for Nielsen.Downloads
