Aim
The focus of Archaeological Textiles Review (ATR) is mainly archaeological textiles, including investigation and technical analysis of all textile materials. The journal welcomes submissions from academics, craftspeople, independent scholars and practitioners. Currently, ATR publishes a unique combination of scientific articles and project reports, conference reviews and other resources. It serves as a lively channel of communication for all who are interested in textile archaeology. All articles and project reports are original and not previously published in the same format. The articles are subjected to double-blind peer review.
History of ATR and ATN
Archaeological Textiles Newsletter(ATN) began in 1985 as a twice-yearly publication for discussion, interaction and exchange of information between archaeologists, conservators, historians, art historians, biologists, chemists, geologists and craftspeople who have a core interest in archaeological textiles. Originally, ATN was intended to be an information service and not a journal. Over the years, it developed into a high-profile scientific journal. In 2012, the name changed to Archaeological Textiles Review (ATR) with only one larger annual issue published at the end of each year.
For many years, ATN/ATR was distributed by subscription to individuals and libraries all over the world. In line with the global trend in academia, ATR transformed into a fully Open Access digital publication in 2019 and in 2025, ATR was moved to tidsskrift.dk.
Archaeological Textiles Review provides immediate Open Access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
The journal does not charge for publishing of articles or any other parts of the editorial process.
