About the Journal

Archaeological Textiles Newsletter (ATN), later changed into Archaeological Textiles Review (ATR), was a twice-yearly publication for textiles, which have been found in archaeological contexts, dating from the prehistoric to the modern age.

The publication of the ATN started in 1985 to provide a medium for discussion, interaction and exchange of information between archaeologists, conservators, historians, art historians, biologists, chemists, geologists and craftspeople, who have archaeological textiles at the core of their interests. It still remains unsurpassed.

Originally, the ATN was intended to be an information service and not a journal. Over the years, however, it has become an important venue for publication of important scientific articles. Currently it publishes a unique combination of featured scientific articles and reports, notes, queries, reviews, resources as well as conference and event announcements, thus truly serving as an active tool of communication. This is largely due to the fact that subscribers to the ATN have been both readers and contributors.

From spring 2008, Centre for Textile Research in Copenhagen (CTR) took over the publication of ATN, and starting 2012 ATN was transformed into ATR. All issues after 2012 are therefore under the ATR webpage (see above) and no new publications will be published here.

History of ATN

Archaeological Textiles Newsletter (ATN) began in 1985 as a twice-yearly publication for discussion, interaction and exchange of information between archaeologists, conservators, historians, art historians, biologists, chemists, geologists and craftspeople who have a core interest in archaeological textiles. Originally, ATN was intended to be an information service and not a journal. Over the years, it developed into a high-profile scientific journal. In 2012, the name changed to Archaeological Textiles Review (ATR) with only one larger annual issue published at the end of each year.

For many years, ATN/ATR was distributed by subscription to individuals and libraries all over the world. In line with the global trend in academia, ATR transformed into a fully open-source digital publication in 2019 and in 2025, ATN and ATR was moved to tidsskrift.dk.

All pervious issues can be purchased as print-on-demand copies from the University of Copenhagen Webshop.
