Abstract

Iben Vyff: The Cold War and the culture of the Danish kitchen, 1945-1965, Arbejderhistorie 2/2012, s. 40-56.
For a whole number of years within the field of research on the Cold War there has been a major focus on kitchens and not least the significance of American kitchens as a powerful cultural weapon during this confrontation. For instance most will recall the image of
Khrushchev and Nixon, discussing kitchens in Moscow in 1959. Taking as a point of departure the Danish literature on kitchens produced by architects and other specialists in the field of the kitchen and household/housekeeping, the article investigates the manner in which Danish kitchen culture reflected the Cold War conflict and in what way it is possible to talk about the Cold War in this area of life. The absence of a Soviet impact is therefore discussed. This cannot be explained alone on the basis of the Cold War conflict
and deliberations over the American kitchen, but as something in the balance between practical rejection, technological inspiration together with political and symbolic enthusiasm.
