Abstract

This founding editorial introduces Ecosystem Intelligence as an emerging field for studying how complex ecosystems become knowable, coordinate action, remain viable, and transform under uncertainty. The proposed field is evolutionary: it integrates insights from established systems, intelligence, resilience, transition, and governance traditions around a distinct research problem: how distributed sensing, interpretation, agency, disturbance absorption, and reorganization affect ecosystem viability. The editorial also acknowledges narrower previous uses of the phrase “ecosystem intelligence” in business-ecosystem analytics and AI-based platform research and proposes a broader scientific meaning centered on distributed ecosystem-level capacity and viability. This editorial proposes the following initial definition: Ecosystem Intelligence is the distributed capacity of a complex ecosystem to sense changing conditions, interpret their significance, coordinate heterogeneous human, artificial, institutional, infrastructural, economic, and environmental components, absorb disturbance, and reorganize under uncertainty while sustaining or restoring ecosystem viability. The editorial clarifies the scientific gap, distinguishes adjacent traditions, proposes four interdependent research areas, introduces an initial Ecosystem Intelligence Diagnostic Protocol, explains how bounded empirical testbeds can be developed across diverse domains, and presents the journal Ecosystem Intelligence and the Ecosystem Intelligence Academy community as complementary forums for building this field through research, debate, and participation. The proposed definition, boundary, research areas, diagnostic protocol, and approach to empirical grounding and testbed development are offered for discussion, testing, refinement, and further development.
