It is an area that experienced all the major political con􀏐licts in the 20th century. The matter is studied through a theoretical and methodical approach inspired by social constructivism, the use of history and conceptual history. It is shown how the collective identity developed from a defensive victim mentality to a positive success story with the provincenation South Tyrol in the centre. Even the Italian-speaking in South Tyrol and the former enemy Trentino were included in the existing regional, national, transnational identities. History had a central position in the preservation of identity and in the process of forgetting as well as in reinterpretation of unwanted narratives of the past that did not 􀏐it into new identity narratives.

A number of factors contributed
to the identity changes, including the decreasing political and cultural
con􀏐lict, the obtained autonomy in South Tyrol, demographic factors as well as international and local conditions.
}, number={13}, journal={Temp - tidsskrift for historie}, author={Pedersen, René Ejbye}, year={2017}, month={jan.}, pages={88–116} }
