Forskere rapporterer som regel om resultaterne af vel gennemførte forskningsprojekter. Det sker i bøger, fagtidsskrifter og på faglige konferencer. Offentligheden hører gennem medierne mest om banebrydende forskningsresultater, om fine priser og store bevillinger. Der fortælles sjældent om forskning, der løber ind i vanskeligheder eller giver `'kedelige resultater', og meget sjældent om forskningsidéer, der slet ikke blev til noget.
