I medierne dukker der med jævne mellemrum historier op om, at musik kan hjælpe patienter med at nedbringe stress eller mildne deres oplevelse af smerte. I flere tilfælde har musikken vist sig at være MusiCure som det eneste bud på hvilken musik, patienter kunne lytte til f.eks. i forbindelse med en operation (se f.eks. Nilsson 2008). Da der jo mildest talt findes meget andet musik, er der efter min mening stor brug for viden om og kendskab til, hvordan musik kan udvælges til forskellige formål, og hvorfor vi bør tilbyde patienter/klienter et valg, inden de lytter til musik i forbindelse med behandling. I denne artikel vil jeg præsentere læseren for forskningslitteratur om anvendelse af musik til at reducere angst og mindske smerte, efterfulgt af en kort præsentation af min egen undersøgelse af musikanvendelse i forhold til postoperative hjerte(klap)patienter på Aalborg Sygehus.
