Resumé

En lang række undersøgelser viser at musikterapi med personer med demens har en positiv effekt. Musik reducerer agiteret adfærd, angst, apati og depression, samt øger kognitive og sociale færdigheder, samarbejdsvillighed og gensidighed, når den anvendes i tværfaglige sammenhænge i plejesituationer eller i forskellige former for musikaktiviteter eller musikterapeutisk behandling. Levende musik samt musik, som den enkelte person foretrækker, har en positiv indflydelse på humør og sociale færdigheder, ikke mindst hvis plejepersonale og familie aktivt inddrages. Personale og pårørende kan af musikterapeuter instrueres i at bruge musik, men der er ligeledes behov for tilbud som fx gruppemusikterapi, som kan være til gavn både for den demensramte og den pårørende. At lytte til musik, eller at spille og synge, aktiverer bevægelse, følelser og erindring, og musikken involverer derfor mere intakte områder af hjernen, således at selv svært demensramte kan genkende og forholde sig til musik. Gennem fælles musikoplevelser i musikterapien kan grundlæggende psykosociale behov dækkes hvorved neuropsykiatriske symptomer på demens reduceres.
