Der er forskningsmæssig evidens for, at musikterapi med børn og unge med fysiske og psykiske funktionsnedsættelser har en signifikant effekt. En meta-analyse påviser, medium-til-stor effekt i forhold til udviklings- og adfærdsmæssige problematikker. Mere specifikt påviser et systematisk forskningsreview øget opmærksomhed, øjenkontakt, vokalisering, imitation, initiering og tur-samspil som følge af musikterapi. Effekten af musikterapi bliver markant højere, når forløbet er på 25 sessioner og derover. Musikterapis effekt i forhold til at øge opmærksomheden kan dels knyttes til musiks generelle evne til at påvirke arousalniveauet hos lytteren og dels til musikterapeuters
specifikke træning i at afstemme og regulere spænding vha. improviseret musik. Tidlige samspilsformer som fx imitation og tur-samspil kan forstærkes musikalsk, ligesom musikkens dynamiske side levner plads til humoristiske samspil. Samtidig er det muligt at udtrykke frustration, vrede og sorg gennem musik, så børn og unge med fysiske og psykiske funktionsnedsættelser, der har svært ved at udtrykke og bearbejde følelsesmæssige og relationelle problemer, kan opbygge positive relationserfaringer og styrke selvfølelsen vha. musikterapi.
