Scandinavian Political Studies, Bind 10 (New Series) (1987) 3

Editorial Note

At the end of January 1987, the Institute of Political Science, University of Aarhus, held a symposium on 'Problems of Participation and Governance in Modern Democracies' in honour of the 50th anniversary of the Faculty of the Social Sciences. The symposium was organized around the presence of three principal guests - Robert A. Dahl (Yale), Claus Offe (Bielefeld), and Alain Touraine (Paris) - who offered a series of lectures and, in the final event of the symposium, faced a large audience in a panel discussion. The editors are pleased to devote part of this issue of Scandinavian Political Studies to papers presented by Dahl and Touraine at the symposium, as well as the main content of the panel discussion. (Regrettably, Offe's presentation is not available in manuscript form.)

The editors express their thanks to Lisbeth Widahl and Annette Riber
who devoted many hours transcribing the panel discussion from tape.
