<p>Pontoppidaniana er et tidsskrift, der har til formål at fremme en forsknings-, uddannelses- og formidlingsvirksomhed, der udgår fra eller er inspireret af Henrik Pontoppidan og hans forfatterskab.</p> <p>Tidsskriftet henvender sig til alle interesserede læsere, men i særlig grad til forskere, studerende og professionelle brugere på universiteter og gymnasier.</p> <p>Tidsskriftet indeholder såvel videnskabelige og fagfællebedømte artikler som artikler og andet indhold af formidlende karakter.</p> <p>Tidsskriftet udgives af Pontoppidan Selskabet. <p><strong>Abstract</strong><br>This article examines the female figure in Pontoppidan’s “A Love Adventure” (da. “Et Kærlighedseventyr”) (1918 and 1930). The female protagonist, the wife of a priest, Ingrid, leaves her husband and children in favor of a life with the philosopher Gabriel Vadum. Where the first edition (1918) finds a solution, the late edition is more socially realistic in its view of women’s conditions. The consequence is here, that her legal husband refuses to let her see her children, which destroys her. Pontoppidan shows in this novel how a destructive male domination can prevent female emancipation – in this case through the freedom of love. In addition, the article shows how a figure such as the saving female-figure is carried forward from romanticism and further into the Modern Breakthrough.</p>Elizabeth Blicher

<p><strong>Abstract</strong><br />This article explores the portrayal of women in Henrik Pontoppidan’s novel The Realm of the Dead (1917). The main argument is that the depiction of women in the novel can be interpreted as a critique of their societal roles at the time. The analysis focuses particularly on Jytte Abildgaard, the novel’s female protagonist. In the article, I draw upon character-analytical perspectives and concepts derived from Per Krog Hansen’s Karakterens Rolle (2000). As well as I as an interpretative and comprehension-enhancing framework for the analysis use, Judith Butler’s article “An Acoount of Oneself” (2005) and insights from Georg Lukác’s Romanens teori (1994) are included. The article concludes that the longing for death that characterizes Jytte Abildgaard is derived from what Lukács mentions as ‘transcendental husvildhed’. This homelessness must be understood as a critique of the limited role of women in society at the time. Based on the findings of this article, it is possible to interpret the portrayal of women as a critique of the contemporary woman’s societal position. My approach is inspired by Roland Barthe’s ideas concerning the readable and writable text. The analysis I unfold here should not be understood as a replacement for previous readings of The Realm of the Dead, but rather as an alternative to canonized interpretations of the novel</p>Laura Koldborg Sørensen

<p><strong>Abstract</strong><br />In this article, Knud Wenzel analyzes the main characters of two great Danish novels of development, Lykke-Per (A Fortunate Man) by Henrik Pontoppidan and Pelle Erobreren (Pelle the Conqueror) by Martin Andersen Nexø with particular reference to their personal and erotic development by focusing on their relationships to a number of women. In Per´s case the development goes towards “identity”, which in this context means a feeling of being an authentic “I” separated from the surroundings, a feeling of “I am me”. As for Pelle, his development takes a different direction, as it results in a feeling of being a part of something bigger than the individual, a feeling of “I am us”. This Wenzel calls “individuality”. Both novels are seen as forming a contrast to the early 19th century Danish tradition of “bildungsliterature”, starting with Adam Oehlenschlæger´s Aladdin (1805).</p>Knud Wentzel

<p><strong>Abstract</strong><br />In this article, we pursue the idea that Pontoppidan’s writing lends itself well to being read with a queer theoretical approach. We focus on Jakobe in Lykke-Per/A Fortunate Man and show how, by virtue of her morbidity, her Jewish otherness, her intelligence, her entrepreneurial initiative and her care for the children of the proletariat, she is an excellent example of Jack Halberstam’s “female masculinity”. <br />In De Dødes Rige/ Realm of the Dead, the author has taken his two main characters out of bourgeois society’s worship of the future in the form of the young child – what Lee Edelman calls “reproductive futurism”. Therein also lies an acceptance of death and the end that departs much from the common worship of progress and future, what Sarah Ensor calls “terminal temporality”. Finally, we point out that there are probably limitations to how queer the author was able to be, a child of his time like anyone else.</p>Camilla SchwartzJon Helt Haarder

<p><strong>Abstract</strong><br>When it comes to female characters in Henrik Pontoppidan´s works, focus is often on either Jakobe Salomon in Lykke-Per (eng. A Fortunate Man) or Jytte Abildgaard in De Dødes Rige (eng. Realm of the Dead) – or both. In this article, Christian de Thurah draws attention to a third female character who appears in two of Pontoppidan´s late works, the play Asgaardsrejen (1906) and the novel Mands Himmerig (1927), Ragna Nordby. This slightly overlooked character is seen here as Pontoppidan´s late attempt to depict a modern, emancipated – even “queer” – female.</p>Christian de Thurah
