Bogen er en oversættelse af Benjamin E. Lippincott, pincott,red.: On the Economic Theory of Socialism (1938 og adskillige gange senere), der indeholder Taylors artikel »The Guidance Production in a Socialist State« {American Economic Review 1921) og Langes »On the Economic Theory of Socialism« [Review of Economic Studies 1936-37) samt en indledning af Lippincott. Både Taylors og Langes bidrag, hvori han viste, at man tog fejl, når man troede, at en socialistisk økonomi ikke kan løse problemet en rationel allokering af sine ressourcer, nogle af de mest centrale bidrag til den økonomiske politiks og planlægnings teori.
