På kanten af det symbolske – en gentænkning af Lévi-Strauss’ strukturelle antropologi

RESUMÉ

Denne artikel undersøger mulighedsbetingelsen for en antropologi i Lévi-Strauss’ tænkning. Gennem en læsning af Introduction à l’oeuvre de Marcel Mauss søger artiklen dels at belyse Lévi-Strauss’ overvejelser over antropologiens natur, dels at belyse de retningslinjer, som han sætter op for strukturalismen som disciplin. Dette gøres med henblik på at gøre op med forestillingen om strukturel antropologi som en streng og formalistisk videnskab, hvis ambition er at afkode mekanismerne bag menneskelige handlinger. Den strukturelle antropologi må i stedet anskues som en videnskabsteori for antropologien, det vil sige en bestræbelse på at etablere de betingelser, hvorunder menneskelige handlinger er mulige at forstå.

ABSTRACT

This article explores the possibility for an anthropology in the philosophy of Lévi-Strauss. Through a reading of Introduction à l’oeuvre de Marcel Mauss the article seeks to illuminate Lévi-Strauss’ considerations on the nature of anthropology on one side, and the guidelines that he sets up for structuralism as a discipline on the other. This is done in order to change the impression of structural anthropology as a strict and formalistic science that aims to decode the mechanisms behind human behavior. Instead, structural anthropology should be considered a theory of anthropology as a science, i.e. as an effort to specify under which conditions human behavior is possible to understand.
