Resumé

Reviews on dictionaries are not only commentaries on the characteristics of individual dictionaries; they are also a source of information on the status and characteristics of the lexicography in specific language communities, reflecting the tradition in each community. This paper contains reflections on the main trends in five reviews on lcelandic dictionaries of varied types, from the decade 1985 to 1995. These reviews show the ruling tradition in lcelandic lexicography, which is strongly influenced by language policy and purism.
