Resumé

The article deals with the contribution of lexicographers to the question of dictionary quality, which is here understood as three user-based requirements: applicability, reliability and accessibility. Explicit reflections on these problems are primarily found in the outside matter of dictionaries. To chart what can be termed the common lexicographic consciousness on the quality of dictionaries, 155 bilingual LSP dictionaries have been analysed. Above and beyond this common base on quality, indication is made of either divergent views or more advanced, individual ideas of dictionary quality. The results can be viewed both as a metalexicographic state of the art as far as the practising lexicographers are concerned, and as an aid to the dictionary critic, making it easier for him to put the right questions.
