Presentation

An important part of geography deals with the study of man-nature interactions. This area of interest has in fact taken the form of a school of 'human ecological geography', which Sofus Christiansen has devoted much interest to. The main efforts have been to the study of agricultural systems, their flows of energy and matter, their organization and the corresponding cultural landscapes. It is in this tradition that the present volume is published in the honour to professor Sofus Christiansen on the occasion of his retirement from the possition as professor in human ecological geography. A selection of his colleagues and collaborators has been invited to contribute papers. Because of a short respite many have had to desist from participating, yet many also have accepted in spite of the time pressure. Most of the papers could be labelled under the keywords agriculture - system - landscape - resource, the keywords for the academic life of Sofus Christiansens. We hope the papers will serve the purpose of giving some inspiring examples from this field of geographical research, while at the same time acknowledging the inspiration from Sofus Christiansen.
