It shows, by giving concrete examples, how the previously known conceptual schemes were employed to describe the reality of the new world during the Age of Discovery. The resulting image of America to the West is characterized by marks of estrangement and otherness, which are central features of utopia. The final part of the article which pertains to the 20th century, starting from the models proposed by Martì, Rodò, Ureña and Retamar, analyses the construction of the new image of America, the way we see it nowadays – where the concepts of transculturation, cultural hybridization or post colonialism play an important role – and how the American identity is gradually shaped.</p>}, journal={Diálogos Latinoamericanos}, author={González Arenas, Isabel}, year={2021}, month={Mar.}, pages={25–39} }
