Many scholars have researched the origin of Gregorian chant and the characteristics of its music theory. Fewer scholars have explored emotions in connection with Gregorian chant and what its effects were on the Christian population in medieval Europe. This paper seeks to uncover the emotions associated with Gregorian chant and its effects on the Christian clergy of the high Middle Ages in its place of origin: the church; seen as both an architectural building and a holy space. Furthermore, through a rhetorical analysis and a behavioral psychological analysis, this paper seeks to theorize the physical and emotional responses to Gregorian chant.
