Resumé

This textual study examines the relationship between the Norse god Thor and natural disasters. This study focuses particularly on the interpretation of natural disasters in medieval saga literature as well as relevant runic iconography. Here, a correlation will be drawn between Thor as a protective entity or the cause of natural disasters, through Heathenry. This includes parallels to the worship of saints and the rituals relating to this practice. This text study aims to map out how medieval Scandinavians interpreted fear and risk through abstract thought and creative writing, as well as how they internalised these feelings during a period in which people were adjusting to a new normal after a natural disaster occurred.
