Abstract

The fairy tale world of Hans Christian Andersen is full of emotions. The research field of affective narratology may therefore shed new light on this world. The article analyzes some of H.C. Andersen’s best-known fairy tales – “The Little Match Stick Girl”, “The Ugly Duckling” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes” – with a focus on affects. It examines in detail how emotions control the narratives and how they connect and form a coherent affective universe.
